Fulfillment of Pledge in Karbala
The event of Karbala can be analyzed from various perspectives. Everyone can benefit from studying the Ashura uprising proportional to his understanding of life and social and human interactions.
In the event of Karbala, we witness two kinds of Wafa, Wafa to Imam Hussein (AS) and Wafa to Quranic pledge, which is a pledge to avoid silence in the face of oppression and injustice.
The Holy Quran says: “Why do you not fight for the cause of God or save the helpless men, women, and children who cry out, ‘Lord, set us free from this town of wrong doers and send us a guardian and a helper?’” (Verse 75 of Surah An-Nisa)
The approach of Hazrat Abbas (AS) and other companions of Imam Hussein (AS), who were true examples of Wafa, was avoiding silence and inaction in the face of injustice and oppression and supporting the oppressed.
The virtuous identity and greatness of Hazrat Abbas (AS) took shape in a background of Quranic education and association with the sublime characters of Imam Ali (AS) and Imam Hussein (AS). This virtuous character developed and evolved over time and was manifested in its highest form in short period (during the Battle of Karbala).
The virtues of Hazrat Abbas (AS) mentioned in historical accounts are understandable and practical for all strata of society. Also, because they are human virtues, they do not belong specifically to any religion or school of thought. Through such characters, Shia Muslims can develop friendship with people from other faiths and denominations.
The Wafa of Hazrat Abbas (AS) can be a model for all humans. The sublime dignity that he has can be presented to the contemporary humans and to future generations, whether Shia or non-Shia, Muslim or non-Muslim, because it is something that goes beyond religious and ideological boundaries and something that everyone, regardless of religion or ideological belief. So it is necessary to introduce this value to human society and promote it.
