TEHRAN (IQNA) – Bani Isra’il were a major people in history. They had been given the pledge of reaching the promised land and God tasked Prophet Moses (AS) to save them. Bani Isra’il was saved but they changed their fate by disobeying God.

Prophet Moses

Prophet Moses (AS) was a descendant of Lavi, a son of Jacob (AS). He is the third Ulu al-Azm messenger of God after Noah (AS) and Abraham (AS). Moses (AS) is known as Kalimullah (one who talks to Allah). He was given the title because he directly talked to God.

Most of his followers were from Bani Isra’il and those who follow Moses (AS) are called Jews. Both words, Bani Isra’il and Jew, are mentioned in the Quran.

The name of Moses is mentioned in the Quran 136 times and in 420 cases, references are made to his story and major events in his life. His name comes in Surahs Al-Baqarah, Al Imran, An-Nisa, Al-Ma’idah, Al-An’am, Al-A’raf, Yunus, Hud, Ibraheem, Al-Isra, Kahf, Maryam, Al-Anbiya, Ash-Shua’ra, An-Naml, Al-Qasas, Al-Ahzab, Safat, Ash-Shura, Zukhruf, An-Nadhiat, and Al-A’ala.

Once, when he saw an Egyptian man attacking a man from Bani Isra’il, Moses defended the oppressed man and hit the Egyptian in the chest. The man died and Moses escaped Egypt.

He went to Madyan, where he encountered girls who were looking after some sheep. Moses (AS) helped them in watering the sheep and accompanied them to their home.

They were the daughters of Shuaib (AS). They urged their father to employ Moses (AS) and he accepted it. Shuaib (AS) then offered him to marry his daughter. After the end of the contract, Moses married one of Shuaib’s daughters.

When he was returning to Egypt, Moses (AS) saw a light from Mount Tur (Sinai) and went toward it. When he reached there, he heard a voice, which was the voice of God talking to Moses (AS) and giving him the news of appointment to prophethood.

He was given the task of going to pharaoh and inviting him to monotheism. Pharaoh rejected his invitation and tried to eliminate Moses and his followers.

Moses and Bani Isra’il escaped from Egypt and the people were saved from the tyrant and his people.

Bani Israe’il moved toward the promised land, which is said to be the Levant, and grew powerful on the path. They were supposed to go to a war but made up excuses and told Moses that he and his God should fight the war. Because of their disobedience, the people were condemned to be stranded in deserts for 40 years and were banned from entering the promised land. In this period, they faced problems such as hunger and thirst and those problems were removed at the order of God.

During that period, Moses (AS) died at the age of 120 or 126. His death is said to have happened in the 17th century BC.
