Iran Condemns Desecration of Quran in Germany, Urges Action against Perpetrators

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the desecration of the Quran in Hamburg, Germany, on the Day of Tasu’a, calling on Berlin to take action against those behind it.

“We are waiting for Germany’s immediate, tough and unequivocal reaction against those behind the sacrilegious act and for it to pursue the case legally to prevent the recurrence of such moves,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kan’ani said on Sunday.

He described the irreverent move as an example of sedition and spreading hate, saying all Muslims, monotheists and those believing in coexistence and dialogue among faiths denounce such actions.

Taking a strong, decisive and deterrent measure against such moves is a responsibility of the governments claiming to be advocates of human rights, freedom and democracy, he stated.     

Kan’ani went on to underline the need for enhanced Muslim unity and solidarity in the face of such plots hatched by the enemies of Islam.

Earlier in the day, a small group of people gathered in front of the Islamic Center of Hamburg, which was hosting a mourning ceremony marking Tasu’a- the 9^th day of the lunar Hijri month of Muharram.

They desecrated a copy of the Holy Quran and chanted slogans against religious figures and Iranian officials.   

Hamburg police refused to take any action against the group despite their provocative and illegal moves.
