TEHRAN (IQNA) – UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for efforts to combat Islamophobia.

Spreading Islamophobia is absolutely intolerable, Guterres said in a joint press conference with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in Islamabad on Sunday.

“It is, for me, absolutely evident that we need to fight Islamophobia very strongly,” he added.

“We are totally committed in our action around the world to fight against all forms of populism that try to use Islamophobia and other forms of hatred, as a tool to win votes, which is totally unacceptable,” Guterres stated.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the UN chief voiced concern about escalation of tensions between Pakistan and India and called on the two sides to exercise self-restraint and chose dialogue to resolve their differences.

He voiced readiness to use the UN’s capacities to mediate between Islamabad and New Delhi.

Guterres also hailed the role Pakistan has played in sheltering and protecting Afghan refugees with limited international assistance and called on Islamabad to contribute to the restoration of peace to the neighboring country.
